"Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: 'Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.' " (CCC 1213)
Baptismal Preparation Sessions are held on a regular basis for parents who would like to have their children baptized. For more information or to schedule a baptism, please contact the parish office.
BAPTISM FAQs
When should I have my baby baptized?
Parents are obliged to baptize infants as soon as possible after birth, preferably in the first few weeks. Consider calling the parish before your child is born so that you have time to schedule the Baptism and complete the Baptismal Preparation session.
What are the requirements for Baptism?
Parents must consent to Baptism and there must be well-founded hope that the child will be brought up in the Catholic faith. At least one parent must be Catholic. If you are not Catholic, it is possible to begin the RCIA process and enter the Church with your child or your family. Please see the Becoming Catholic section for more information.
What are the requirements for Sponsors/Godparents?
A sponsor assists the parents in presenting the child for Baptism and commits to helping the child lead a Christian life. Only one sponsor is required. If there are two sponsors, one must be male and one must be female. You cannot have more than two sponsors. A sponsor must be a practicing Catholic who has already received the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. The person should be at least 16 years old (unless an exception is granted) and cannot be the mother or father of the child to be baptized.
Can a non-Catholic be a sponsor?
No. A sponsor must be a practicing Catholic. However, if there is only one sponsor, a non-Catholic Christian may serve as a witness to the Baptism.
